Exploring the Pentatonic Scale: Building your own Musical Vocabulary

In the vastness of musical scales, the pentatonic scale stands as an essential pillar for every guitarist. In addition to exploring its "boxes" and practicing exercises, there is a further crucial step in your musical growth: building your musical vocabulary.

While technical exercises and in-depth knowledge of the "boxes" provide a solid foundation, the real magic begins when you begin to shape your musical language. Having a wide range of licks and musical phrases will allow you to build your own increasingly interesting musical expressiveness over time.

The 40 licks that I have prepared are designed for those who begin this journey of building their own musical vocabulary. We start with simple licks and then gradually add elements of difficulty (bending, hammer on, pull off, slide, syncopations). In all cases, exclusively the pentatonic scale is used so as to always be able to orient oneself on the neck with the relative boxes.

Videos for Every Lick

Each lick is accompanied by a video in which it is first played on a simple musical base and then freely but slowly, in order to facilitate the study of the fingerings. Also on each video is the tablature and the box of the pentatonic on which the lick is developed.

All licks are played on the A minor pentatonic. Once you learn the licks in this key, go further and experiment with other keys. This is the best way to internalize and master the musical language we are building. I also suggest using backing tracks of different types and speeds to train yourself to make these licks your own and be able to insert them into various contexts.

Each lick develops on a single box of the pentatonic (apart from lick 40, which for an instant invades the next box). This will also make it easier to carry in other shades.
